ABOUT SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY

What is the difference between a speech disorder and a language disorder? Speech therapy is a catch all name describing treatment for all communication difficulties.

SPEECH relates to the physical production of sounds that we use for speech. For example, a someone struggling to produce the “r” sound, a lisp, or someone who struggles to sequence sounds together would have a speech sound disorder.

LANGUAGE refers to expressing oneself through words, gestures, or other forms of communication. Language disorders can be expressive (the person with the language disorder struggles to speak) or receptive (the person with the language disorder struggles to understand language).

FLUENCY (often called stuttering) refers to when there are breaks in the rhythm of speech. No speech is completely fluent but if the dysfluencies are causing emotional distress or make them difficult to understand, speech therapy can help!

LITERACY refers to the ability to read and write. Children who are struggling to learn their letters and the sounds they make, children struggling to read and/or understand what they are reading, and children struggling with writing may have a literacy delay. Adults who are struggling to read and write after a stroke or TBI may want to regain this skill through speech therapy.

Literacy disorders such as dyslexia (difficulty reading) and dysgraphia (difficulty writing) fall into this category as well. If you’re interested you can click to learn more about how SLPs can help with literacy.

It is also possible for a someone to have a combination of difficulties!
